NASA officially targets early 2028 for the first Artemis lunar landing, but prediction-market traders are considerably more cautious about the timetable. Kalshi currently puts the chance of a NASA Moon landing before 2029 at just 18%.

More than half a century has passed since astronauts last walked on the Moon, but NASA now has an official target for putting humans back on the lunar surface. The agency says Artemis IV is scheduled for early 2028 and is intended to become the first crewed lunar landing of the Artemis era.

Prediction-market traders are not nearly as confident in that schedule. The current Kalshi market gives NASA only an 18% chance of landing on the Moon before 2029, while the probability rises to 45% for a landing before 2030.

The difference between NASA's official target and the market's current expectations creates an interesting question for anyone following Prediction Markets: will Artemis IV actually land astronauts on the lunar surface in 2028, or will technical requirements, commercial lander development, testing, and the realities of human spaceflight push the mission farther into the future?

Kalshi Traders Are More Cautious Than NASA

The largest disconnect in this market is the gap between NASA's stated schedule and the current prediction-market pricing.

The contract for before 2029 is especially notable because NASA's current schedule places Artemis IV in early 2028. If the agency meets that target, a successful Artemis IV landing would occur comfortably before the end of 2028.

Yet traders currently assign that outcome only an 18% probability. The before-2030 contract is much closer to an even market at 45%.

NASA Is Officially Targeting Early 2028

NASA's Artemis IV mission page currently lists the launch for early 2028 and describes the mission as humanity's return to the lunar surface.

The planned mission calls for four astronauts to launch aboard Orion on NASA's Space Launch System rocket. Once Orion reaches lunar orbit, two members of the crew are expected to transfer to a commercial human landing system and descend to the Moon.

NASA says the astronauts are expected to spend approximately one week near the lunar South Pole, where they will collect samples, perform science experiments, and observe the lunar environment before returning to Orion.

One important part of that schedule is outside Orion itself. NASA says lander readiness will determine which commercial provider can safely transport the crew from lunar orbit to the surface and back.

Artemis III Is Now a 2027 Demonstration Mission

NASA's current architecture places Artemis III in 2027 as a demonstration mission in low Earth orbit rather than the first human lunar landing.

The purpose is to test one or both commercial human landing systems being developed by SpaceX and Blue Origin. Those tests include the rendezvous and docking operations between Orion and the commercial landers that will be required before astronauts can descend to the lunar surface during Artemis IV.

That means major technical milestones still have to be completed before the early-2028 landing target can become reality.

What Could Delay the First Artemis Moon Landing?

Space missions rarely depend on one vehicle or one launch date. Artemis IV requires NASA's SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft, a commercial lunar lander, docking operations, spacesuits, mission systems, and extensive safety testing to be ready at the same time.

FOX Weather notes that SpaceX's Starship and Blue Origin's Blue Moon are both part of NASA's commercial landing-system development. The commercial lander selected for the mission will have to demonstrate that it can safely carry astronauts from Orion in lunar orbit to the surface and back again.

Human spaceflight also requires NASA to address hazards that extend far beyond launch reliability. One example is radiation exposure.

ABC News reported in August that scientists studying radiation data collected during Artemis I found that a protective vest tested on a manikin could substantially reduce exposure during severe solar storms. The research is one example of the work still being done to improve astronaut safety as NASA prepares for longer missions beyond low Earth orbit.

What a Before-2029 YES Prediction Could Look Like at 23¢

The current YES price for a NASA landing before 2029 is approximately 23¢. A winning contract settles at $1 if the market's resolution conditions are satisfied.

These are simplified examples based on a 23¢ contract price and whole contracts. They do not include fees, order-book movement, or differences between the displayed contract price and actual execution cost.

The live Kalshi order example shown when this article was prepared priced 1,000 before-2029 shares at an average contract price of 23.47¢. The interface estimated a total cost of $247.23, a maximum payout of $1,000, and potential profit of $752.77 if the contract resolves YES.

My Prediction for NASA's Return to the Moon

Space programs come with delays. Sometimes they're small, and sometimes one technical problem can push a mission back months or longer. I don't think there's one useful official number that tells us exactly how often every NASA mission launches "on time," because mission targets change throughout development and even a scheduled launch can be scrubbed at the last minute.

That's why I wouldn't look at NASA's early-2028 date and assume it's guaranteed. At the same time, NASA itself is publicly targeting early 2028 for Artemis IV, and we're already well into the Artemis program. Artemis I has flown, Artemis II has flown around the Moon with astronauts, Artemis III is now planned as the lander demonstration mission, and Artemis IV is supposed to put people back on the surface.

Because of that, I think before 2029 is a good call.

What makes it even more interesting to me is the current price. The YES contract is around 23¢, even though NASA's own published plan is to land in early 2028. The live Kalshi example shows 1,000 shares with an estimated $247.23 total cost and a $752.77 potential profit if NASA gets there before 2029.

Even the before-2030 contract is only around 45¢. Obviously, none of this means NASA will actually make the deadline. SpaceX, Blue Origin, NASA, Orion, SLS, the lander, docking systems, suits, and safety requirements all have to come together.

If this were five or more years ago, I probably would've been much more hesitant. Today, though, NASA is already moving through the Artemis sequence, and the agency is openly planning for astronauts to be back on the lunar surface in 2028.

That's enough for me to think the market may be underestimating the before-2029 outcome. Of course, that's my personal prediction. You'll have to rely on your own research and judgment before deciding what you think. How about you? Does NASA make it back to the Moon before 2029?

NASA's Moon Timeline Will Become Clearer in 2027

The most important period to watch may be 2027. Artemis III is supposed to demonstrate the systems required for the lunar landing, which means its progress should provide much more information about whether an early-2028 Artemis IV mission remains realistic.

Successful commercial lander tests, docking demonstrations, hardware readiness, and firm mission scheduling could increase confidence in the 2028 target. Significant technical setbacks could have the opposite effect.

Those developments are also likely to affect the prices available through Kalshi because prediction markets can react as new information reaches traders.
