Kalshi Prediction Markets
Kalshi Prediction Markets
Kalshi is a federally regulated prediction market exchange where traders buy and sell event contracts tied to real-world outcomes. This guide explains how Kalshi works, what makes it different from a sportsbook, how accounts and fees operate, and what new traders should know before risking money.

What Kalshi Is and What Traders Can Do There
Kalshi turns measurable future events into contracts that can be traded through an exchange rather than accepted as wagers by a house.
Each market begins with a defined question and settlement rule. Traders can take a Yes or No position, and the price changes as participants respond to news, data, injuries, polling, weather forecasts, court rulings and other information. Markets can cover politics, sports, economics, crypto, entertainment, weather, commodities and financial benchmarks.
New traders looking for a current offer should review the Kalshi promo code page before opening an account. It explains the current signup offer, the first-trade requirement and the conditions that determine when bonus credits unlock.
Kalshi operates as an exchange. It matches market participants who disagree about an outcome and collects transaction fees rather than taking the opposite side of every position. That distinction affects pricing, order execution, early exits and the language experienced users apply to the platform.
Kalshi Stock Search and Live Market Ticker
Kalshi isn't publicly traded, so there is no public Kalshi stock symbol. This strip displays live event-contract data from Kalshi's public market API, not shares in the company.
How Kalshi Trading Works
The basic process is simple, but the contract rules, price and liquidity determine whether a trade is sensible.
Read the Question
Confirm the event, deadline, settlement source and exact condition required for the contract to resolve Yes.
Choose Yes or No
Select the side that matches your view. Contract prices generally range from $0.01 to $0.99.
Set Price and Quantity
Use the available order type, review fees and decide how many contracts fit within your risk limit.
Sell or Hold
Close the position before settlement when liquidity is available, or hold until the official result is determined.
Simple Kalshi Contract Example
Suppose a Yes contract trades at $0.42. Buying 20 contracts costs $8.40 before fees. When the event occurs and the market resolves Yes, those contracts settle for $20, creating an $11.60 gross profit before fees. When the event doesn't occur, the contracts settle at zero and the $8.40 contract cost is lost. The position may also be sold before settlement at the available market price, which can lock in a smaller gain or loss. A price near $0.42 can be read as roughly a 42% market-implied chance, but it isn't a guarantee or an official forecast.
Example Calculation
Quick Orders, Limit Orders and Liquidity
Quick orders seek immediate execution against available orders. Limit orders let traders set a maximum purchase price or minimum sale price, but they may remain unfilled. Resting orders can improve market liquidity, while thin order books can produce wider spreads and make early exits harder.
Kalshi Trading, Betting and Gambling Terminology
“Kalshi betting” is a common search phrase, especially for sports-related contracts, but it doesn't fully describe the exchange structure.
Why Traders Usually Say “Trading”
Kalshi members trade with other market participants through an order book. Prices move with supply and demand, positions can be sold before settlement, and the exchange charges transaction fees. Those mechanics resemble derivatives and stock exchanges more than a traditional sportsbook counter.
Why Some People Still Call It Betting
Contracts can involve uncertain outcomes and can result in a total loss, so the experience may feel similar to wagering. Sports markets also use familiar teams and game outcomes. The important point isn't to police the vocabulary, but to understand that the legal product is an event contract traded on a federally designated exchange.
The question “is Kalshi gambling?” doesn't have one useful one-word answer for every context. Kalshi is regulated as a derivatives exchange under federal commodities law, not licensed as a state sportsbook. At the same time, trading involves speculation and real financial risk. Federal designation is established, while state disputes over some sports contracts have continued through litigation.
Kalshi Is a Legitimate CFTC-Regulated Exchange
“Is Kalshi legit?” is reasonable to ask because prediction trading is still unfamiliar to many people.
KalshiEX received Designated Contract Market status from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in 2020. That places the exchange under the Commodity Exchange Act and CFTC rules governing market integrity, records, financial resources, surveillance and customer eligibility. Regulation doesn't guarantee profits, prevent every dispute or make every contract suitable for every trader.
Members agree to exchange rules covering account eligibility, order activity, prohibited conduct and dispute procedures. The current Kalshi Member Agreement should be read before opening an account or trading.
Identity and Account Controls
Individual members complete identity verification, and Kalshi can request documents related to address, employment or source of funds. KYC and anti-money-laundering controls support legal eligibility and duplicate-account prevention.
Surveillance and Audit Trails
Order and trade records create an audit trail from receipt through execution and allocation. Compliance personnel review anomalous activity and can investigate suspected manipulation, wash trading, spoofing or misuse of nonpublic information.
Enforcement and Reporting
Kalshi rules allow account restrictions, financial penalties, suspensions and permanent exclusions. Confirmed disciplinary matters can be reported to the CFTC or other authorities when required.
Kalshi Company History and Founders
Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara founded Kalshi after identifying how difficult it was to obtain direct exposure to specific event outcomes through traditional financial products.
Founding at the Intersection of Finance and Events
Mansour and Lopes Lara met at MIT and later worked in finance. Their experience showed that institutions often built complicated bundles of derivatives to approximate exposure to events that could have been expressed more directly.
Y Combinator and Early Product Development
Kalshi joined Y Combinator's Winter batch and continued developing the exchange, market rules and product experience while pursuing a federal regulatory path.
Federal Exchange Designation
The CFTC designated KalshiEX as a contract market, making Kalshi the first federally regulated exchange built specifically around event contracts.
Election Markets Enter the U.S. Mainstream
Court rulings allowed Kalshi to list contracts involving control of Congress and other election outcomes after the company challenged the CFTC's earlier prohibition.
Consumer and Institutional Expansion
Kalshi now serves retail traders and qualifying institutions, offers thousands of event markets, publishes market data through an API and continues expanding exchange products and brokerage integrations.
Kalshi Markets and the News That Moves Prices
Kalshi news matters because event-contract prices can react quickly when new information changes the expected outcome.
Politics and Government
Elections, nominations, congressional control, legislation, appointments and public-policy outcomes.
Sports
Games, tournaments, championships, team performance and other measurable sports results.
Economy and Finance
Inflation, interest rates, unemployment, GDP, indexes, commodities and measurable market levels.
Weather
Temperatures, precipitation, snowfall, hurricanes and official weather measurements.
Crypto
Digital asset prices, market milestones, regulation and other objectively resolvable crypto events.
Entertainment and Culture
Awards, releases, streaming, public appearances, media and cultural events with defined outcomes.
Breaking news can improve a trader's information set, but speed alone isn't enough. Contract rules, official settlement sources, liquidity and the possibility that the market has already priced in the news all matter. Our broader Prediction Markets guide explains how event prices should be interpreted across platforms.
Kalshi Trading Hours and Scheduled Maintenance
Kalshi's published schedule provides continuous trading most of the week, with a regular Thursday maintenance window.
| Day | Published Trading Hours | What Traders Should Know |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | 24 hours | Markets can still have their own closing times and pauses. |
| Monday | 24 hours | Contract-specific rules control whether an individual market is open. |
| Tuesday | 24 hours | Liquidity can vary considerably by market and time of day. |
| Wednesday | 24 hours | Open orders remain subject to exchange and market controls. |
| Thursday | 22 hours | Regular maintenance is scheduled from 3:00 AM to 5:00 AM ET. |
| Friday | 24 hours | The exchange can pause trading when operational or market issues arise. |
| Saturday | 24 hours | Event deadlines can close individual contracts before settlement. |
During scheduled maintenance, new orders can't be placed or modified. Existing positions remain open, and trading resumes after the exchange returns. The live status indicator near the top of this page checks Kalshi's official exchange-status endpoint.
Kalshi Fees, Orders and Incentive Programs
Fees and rewards can vary by market, order behavior and active promotional program.
Transaction Fees
Kalshi charges transaction fees based on the expected earnings of a contract. Some high-profile markets use different fee rules, and the order screen should show the applicable amount before submission.
Maker and Taker Behavior
Orders that execute immediately remove liquidity. Resting orders add liquidity and may qualify for different fee treatment, although certain markets can apply maker fees. Unfilled canceled orders don't create an execution fee.
Kalshi Incentives
Kalshi can reward eligible volume or resting orders that improve liquidity in selected markets. Programs have specific dates, scoring rules, eligibility restrictions and reward pools, so traders should review the active Kalshi incentives before changing their order strategy.
Kalshi Signup, Funding, Withdrawals and Taxes
Account setup combines identity verification, funding choices, transaction records and tax documentation.
Opening and Funding an Account
Individual applicants provide personal information and complete verification before trading. Funding methods can include supported bank transfers and other options shown in the account. Deposit availability, holds and withdrawal timing depend on the method and account status.
Account access also means accepting the Kalshi Member Agreement, which governs membership duties, exchange activity and account restrictions.
Taxes and Trading Records
Kalshi provides yearly profit-and-loss information and may issue tax documents when applicable reporting thresholds are met. Available forms can include 1099-INT for interest, 1099-MISC for credits or rewards, and forms connected to qualifying broker or digital-asset transactions.
Tax treatment depends on the product and taxpayer. Save statements, fees, rewards, deposits, withdrawals and settlement records, then consult a qualified tax professional rather than relying only on a platform summary.
Event Contracts and Perpetual Futures Use Separate Balances
Kalshi's prediction-market balance is separate from its perpetual futures margin account. Perpetuals can use leverage and have no expiration, which creates liquidation and funding risks that don't apply in the same way to fully paid binary event contracts. Funds committed as margin can't be transferred until they are released from open positions.
Kalshi Referral Code and Invite-a-Friend Reward
Kalshi referral rewards are separate from the larger new-account signup promotion.
The referral program can reward both the existing member and the invited friend after signup, identity verification and the trading requirement shown in the Rewards section. Kalshi has offered a $25 reward to each side, but referral amounts and conditions can change, so confirm the live amount before completing the required trade.
Market Integrity and Responsible Kalshi Trading
Federal regulation and surveillance reduce certain risks, but traders remain responsible for position size, information quality and account security.
Prohibited Trading Activity
Kalshi prohibits wash trading, spoofing, front-running, noncompetitive transactions and trading by people using material nonpublic information or direct influence over an event.
Responsible Trading Tools
Account tools can include trading breaks, self-exclusion, deposit limits and security controls. These tools are designed to help members manage time, exposure and access before activity becomes difficult to control.
Contract and Information Risk
Rumors, low liquidity, ambiguous expectations and misunderstood settlement rules can all create losses. Read the entire contract and verify the official resolution source before trading.
Prediction markets aren't savings accounts, and regulatory status doesn't protect a trader from an incorrect view. Use only discretionary money, avoid chasing losses and review the Prediction Market Risk Disclosure before opening a position.
Review the Kalshi Signup Offer Before Trading
The current new-account promotion can unlock up to $500 in bonus credits after an eligible user completes the first $25 trade. Eligibility, market restrictions, credit timing and expiration rules apply, so read the offer terms before depositing or placing the qualifying trade.
