What Are Kalshi Perpetuals? A Beginner's Guide to Crypto Perpetual Futures

Kalshi Perpetuals trading guide covering crypto perpetual futures, leverage, Up and Down positions, funding, and liquidation

Kalshi Perpetuals let eligible traders take an Up or Down position on cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin without buying or holding the underlying coin. Unlike normal Kalshi prediction contracts, perpetual futures have no fixed expiration date and can include leverage, funding payments, take-profit orders, stop losses, and liquidation.

Kalshi Perpetuals are crypto perpetual futures that let you trade on whether the price of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, and other supported cryptocurrencies will move up or down. You do not need to buy the cryptocurrency itself, store it in a wallet, or wait for a normal prediction contract to resolve.

Kalshi describes its Perpetuals as CFTC-approved perpetual futures and says it is the first company in U.S. history to offer regulated perpetual futures to American traders.

The basic idea is simple. Choose Up if you expect the cryptocurrency to rise. Choose Down if you expect the cryptocurrency to fall. Your position changes in value as the underlying crypto price moves.

Perpetuals also introduce leverage, margin, funding, liquidation, and other mechanics that are not part of an ordinary fully paid Yes or No prediction contract.

What Is a Perpetual Future?

A perpetual future is a contract whose value follows another asset, such as Bitcoin, without having a fixed expiration date.

You can hold the position for five minutes, several days, or longer. You decide when to close it unless the position closes earlier because of a take-profit order, stop loss, liquidation, or another account event.

That lack of a scheduled expiration is what makes the contract perpetual.

Kalshi Predictions and Kalshi Perpetuals Are Different Products

Perpetual futures appear inside the same Kalshi account, but they operate differently from Kalshi event contracts.

Feature Prediction Contract Perpetual Future
Basic Question Will a specific event happen? Will the crypto price move up or down?
Example Will Bitcoin be above a certain price Friday? Trade Bitcoin Up or Down from its current price
Expiration Defined settlement condition or deadline No fixed expiration date
Settlement Typically resolves based on a Yes or No event Position value moves with the underlying crypto price
Leverage Not used in the same way on an ordinary fully paid contract Available up to the current limit for each cryptocurrency
Funding No perpetual funding cycle Funding is calculated every 8 hours
Liquidation Not part of a fully paid Yes or No contract Leveraged positions can be liquidated

Trading Up or Down

Every Kalshi Perpetuals position begins with deciding which direction you believe the crypto price will move.

Trade Up

An Up position is a long position. If the cryptocurrency rises after you open the position, the trade moves in your favor. If it falls, the position moves against you.

Trade Down

A Down position is a short position. If the cryptocurrency falls after you open the position, the trade moves in your favor. If the price rises, the position moves against you.

How Leverage Works

Leverage lets you control a larger position using less upfront cash. The tradeoff is that the position becomes more sensitive to every move in the underlying cryptocurrency.

A trader using $1,000 of cash at 5× leverage controls a $5,000 position. A 10% move in the asset changes the value of that position by about $500 before funding, fees, and other costs.

Upfront Cash Leverage Position Size Approx. Effect of 1% Move
$1,000 $1,000 $10
$1,000 $2,000 $20
$1,000 $3,000 $30
$1,000 $5,000 $50
$1,000 6.1× $6,100 $61

These examples are mathematical illustrations. Funding, fees, liquidation, slippage, and other costs are not included.

More Leverage Gives the Position Less Room to Move Against You

Higher leverage means a smaller adverse crypto price move can consume the margin supporting the position. Kalshi gives an educational example where a Bitcoin move of roughly 7% against a position using 5× leverage could result in liquidation.

The actual liquidation level depends on the entry price, leverage selected, account margin, maintenance requirements, fees, and market conditions.

Current Maximum Leverage by Cryptocurrency

Maximum leverage can change. The Kalshi screens reviewed for this guide showed the following limits at the time they were captured.

Cryptocurrency Ticker Maximum Leverage Shown
Bitcoin BTC 6.1×
Ethereum ETH 4.7×
Bitcoin Cash BCH 4.4×
Litecoin LTC 4.0×
XRP XRP 3.8×
Chainlink LINK 3.8×
Dogecoin DOGE 3.7×
Solana SOL 3.5×
Shiba Inu kSHIB 3.4×
NEAR Protocol NEAR 3.3×
Zcash ZEC 3.3×
Sui SUI 3.1×
Hyperliquid HYPE 2.3×

Leverage limits are dynamic and may be different when you visit Kalshi.

Bitcoin Perpetual Example

The Bitcoin screen reviewed for this guide shows how a leveraged position is built before the order is placed.

In the example, $20 in cost with approximately 3.6× leverage creates a total position size of about $69.27.

The same screen displays a liquidation level near $64,340 while Bitcoin is trading around $76,900. Changing the leverage, entry price, or position size changes that liquidation level.

Always Review the Liquidation Price

The liquidation level shows approximately how far the market can move against your leveraged position before the available margin is no longer sufficient to maintain it.

Increasing leverage generally moves that liquidation level closer to the current market price.

Take Profit and Stop Loss

Kalshi lets you set automatic exit levels when managing a Perpetuals position.

Take Profit

Choose a price where the position should close automatically after the crypto price has moved in your favor.

Stop Loss

Choose a price where the position should close if the crypto price moves against you.

Stop-loss orders can help manage risk, but rapid price movements can still cause execution at a different price than the selected trigger.

What Is the Funding Rate?

Perpetual futures have no expiration date, so a funding mechanism is used to help keep the perpetual price close to the underlying cryptocurrency price.

Kalshi runs a funding cycle every 8 hours, which means funding is recalculated three times each day.

  • If long positions dominate, long traders may pay short traders.
  • If short positions dominate, short traders may pay long traders.
  • If the funding rate is 0%, neither side pays funding for that period.
  • Funding fees are capped at 2% of the position per 8-hour period.

Funding moves between traders rather than operating as a normal trading fee paid to Kalshi.

Earn Interest on Eligible Perpetuals Cash

Eligible U.S. customers currently earn 3.25% APR on qualifying cash held in their Kalshi Perpetuals margin account.

The cash can be supporting an open position or sitting idle in the account. Interest is calculated using the balance at the end of each day and is currently paid monthly.

An average daily balance of at least $250 is currently required to qualify.

Cash Balance APR Illustrative Annual Interest
$1,000 3.25% $32.50
$10,000 3.25% $325
$100,000 3.25% $3,250

These are mathematical examples assuming the APR remains unchanged for one year. Eligibility and rates can change.

What Is Liquidation?

Liquidation is one of the most important parts of leveraged Perpetuals trading.

The cash committed to the position acts as margin. When the crypto price moves against the position, the equity supporting it decreases.

If the remaining margin falls below the required level, Kalshi can automatically begin closing the position.

Liquidation is designed to limit losses, but it is not a guaranteed stop-loss price.

Can You Lose More Than You Deposit?

Yes, in extreme circumstances. Automatic liquidation is designed to reduce losses, but rapid price changes, price gaps, or limited liquidity can cause a position to close at a worse price than the liquidation trigger. This can potentially create a negative account balance.

Perps Bonus

Get $25 for your next Perps trade

How Kalshi Perpetuals Promotions Work

Kalshi can run several different types of Perpetuals promotions. Each campaign can have its own eligibility rules, trading requirement, expiration date, and credit amount.

  • New Perps user promotions tied to completing qualifying trading activity.
  • Perpetuals referral bonuses tied to a referred user enabling Perps and completing qualifying activity.
  • Survey and feedback credits offered to selected users.

Offers are not necessarily available to every account. Review the promotion shown inside your own Kalshi account before completing the required activity.

Where Perps Promotional Credits Go

Perps promotional credits are deposited into the Perpetuals account rather than the regular Predictions balance.

Credits cannot be transferred between the Predictions balance and Perpetuals balance.

Promotional credits themselves cannot be withdrawn, although eligible winnings generated through their use can be withdrawn.

Some credits expire after 7 days if they are not used.

What If Your Perps Promotion Is Not Updating?

Qualifying activity can take time to appear in the promotion tracker.

If the tracker has not updated after 24 hours, first confirm that the trades were completed in a qualifying Perpetuals market after the promotion started and before it expired.

If everything appears correct, contact Kalshi support with screenshots of the promotion tracker and your Perpetuals trading activity.

Kalshi Perpetuals Referral Bonuses

A Perpetuals referral promotion can require more than referring someone to a standard Kalshi account.

The referred person may need to fully enable Perpetuals and complete the qualifying activity stated in the campaign.

The current broader Kalshi referral screen reviewed for this guide also displays an Invite a Friend offer with a $25 reward and the ability to earn up to $1,000, subject to the current referral requirements.

Referral promotions and Perpetuals promotions can change independently.

How Much Money Do You Need to Start?

Minimum position sizes depend on the cryptocurrency, but some Perpetuals positions can be opened with very small amounts.

A low minimum does not change how leverage works. The amount committed, total position size, leverage level, and distance to liquidation should still be reviewed before opening the position.

Are Kalshi Perpetuals Regulated?

Kalshi says its Perpetuals are CFTC-approved perpetual futures and that it is the first company in U.S. history to offer regulated perpetual futures to American traders.

Regulatory oversight does not eliminate market risk. Crypto prices can change rapidly, leverage amplifies those movements, and leveraged positions can be liquidated.

Kalshi Perpetuals FAQs

Do Kalshi Perpetuals expire?

No. Perpetual futures do not have a fixed expiration date. You can close the position when you choose unless it closes earlier because of a take-profit order, stop loss, liquidation, or another account event.

Do I own Bitcoin when I trade a Bitcoin Perpetual?

No. You are trading a futures position linked to Bitcoin's price. You do not need to buy, hold, or store BTC.

Can I trade if I think Bitcoin will fall?

Yes. Choose Down if you believe the underlying cryptocurrency price will decrease.

Do I have to use maximum leverage?

No. You can select a lower leverage level. Lower leverage generally gives the position more room to absorb normal market movement before reaching liquidation.

How often is funding calculated?

Funding is calculated every 8 hours. Depending on the funding rate, long traders can pay short traders, short traders can pay long traders, or neither side may pay if the rate is 0%.

Does Kalshi pay interest on Perps cash?

Eligible U.S. customers currently earn 3.25% APR on qualifying cash in the Perpetuals margin account. The current minimum average daily balance is $250. Rates and eligibility can change.

Can a Perpetuals position be liquidated?

Yes. If losses reduce the margin supporting a leveraged position below the required level, Kalshi can automatically close the position.

Can I lose more than I deposit?

Potentially. Automatic liquidation is designed to limit losses, but rapid price movement or limited liquidity can result in execution at a worse price and may produce a negative account balance.

Where do Perps promotional credits appear?

Perps promotional credits appear in the Perpetuals account rather than the Predictions balance. They cannot be transferred between the two balances.

What is the current Kalshi Perps promotion?

Kalshi is currently displaying an offer to get $25 for your next Perps trade after opening $50 in perpetual positions. Eligibility, duration, and requirements can vary by account.

Perpetuals Are Different From Standard Prediction Contracts

Perpetual futures have no fixed expiration date, allow leverage, use margin, include funding payments, and can be liquidated. Those mechanics should be understood before opening a position.

Perpetual Futures Risk Disclosure

Perpetual futures involve substantial risk of loss and are not suitable for all customers. You may lose all funds you commit, including fees and commissions, and you may be required to post additional margin or make additional payments. All trading decisions are your own and at your own risk. By proceeding, you acknowledge that you have read the CFTC Risk Disclosure Statement and agree to the Terms of Use and Customer Agreement.

Are Kalshi Perpetuals Good for Beginners?

The Up and Down interface makes the directional part of Perpetuals easy to understand, but the product itself is more complex than a normal Kalshi prediction contract.

New traders should understand leverage, margin, liquidation, funding, and stop losses before increasing position size or choosing high leverage.

Anyone already familiar with crypto futures may recognize most of these mechanics. Someone coming directly from event contracts should spend more time learning how leveraged positions respond to price movement.
