Who Will Win Best Picture at the 99th Academy Awards?
The Odyssey has separated itself from the field in Kalshi's early Best Picture market, but The Black Ball, Dune: Part Three, Wild Horse Nine, and several other films still have months to build momentum before Academy voters decide the winner in March 2027.
The 99th Academy Awards are still more than six months away, but the Best Picture race is already taking shape across awards-season forecasts and prediction markets. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey currently holds a commanding lead on Kalshi, with more than half of the market's displayed probability concentrated on one film.
That does not mean the race is over. Some of the most important fall releases have not reached theaters yet, nominations will not be announced until January, and films such as Dune: Part Three, Wild Horse Nine, Digger, The Debut, and La Bola Negra still have major theatrical, festival, or awards-season runs ahead of them.
The current Kalshi market has reported more than $4.8 million in overall volume. Anyone unfamiliar with the way these contracts work can review our Kalshi Prediction Markets guide before looking at the individual movie prices.

The Odyssey Is Also Leading Outside the Prediction Market
The market's current favorite is not an isolated pick. AwardsWatch placed The Odyssey first in its August Best Picture forecast, followed by La Bola Negra, Wild Horse Nine, Fjord, and Behemoth!, with Dune: Part Three sixth.
Entertainment Weekly also identifies The Odyssey as one of the year's most obvious awards contenders, while separately highlighting Wild Horse Nine, Dune: Part Three, Digger, Fjord, The Debut, and Project Hail Mary as films that could matter during the 2027 Oscar season.

The Best Picture race will become much easier to evaluate once Academy voting begins in January. Until then, the market is pricing films before the final field of nominees is even known.
Final Oscar voting is scheduled to run from February 25 through March 4, 2027. The ceremony will be held Sunday, March 14, 2027.
The Movies Currently Attracting Market Volume
The eight films below are the titles in the supplied Kalshi data with current market activity. Each has a very different path to Best Picture, which is why looking beyond the contract price matters this early in the awards season.
About The Odyssey
YES 51¢Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's epic follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, on the dangerous journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The nearly three-hour film was released July 17 and features a massive ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Nolan shot the movie entirely with IMAX film cameras, giving it the kind of large-scale technical profile that can compete across directing, cinematography, production design, sound, visual effects, acting, and Best Picture. More importantly for the current race, Academy voters do not have to predict whether the movie will work because it is already in theaters. AwardsWatch currently has it first in Best Picture, and Entertainment Weekly describes it as one of the year's most obvious Oscar contenders.
About The Black Ball
YES 13¢Kalshi lists this movie under the English title The Black Ball, while Netflix is releasing it as La Bola Negra. Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the Spanish drama moves between 1932, 1937, and 2017 as three generations of men confront questions of desire, identity, inheritance, repression, and family history. The filmmakers drew inspiration from Federico García Lorca's unfinished work and related material, and the cast includes Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, Lola Dueñas, and Julio Torres. After a strong Cannes reception, Netflix is giving the film a U.S. theatrical run beginning October 16 before its December 2 streaming debut. AwardsWatch currently places it second in the Best Picture race.
About Dune: Part Three
YES 12¢Denis Villeneuve's Dune trilogy reaches its conclusion on December 18. The third film is set nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium, with Timothée Chalamet returning alongside Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson, Javier Bardem, and others. The first two Dune films were both nominated for Best Picture, and the original won six Academy Awards, so the franchise already has a proven relationship with Oscar voters. The question is whether the final chapter becomes a major Best Picture culmination or whether another large-scale film, particularly The Odyssey, absorbs too much of the same awards-season attention. AwardsWatch currently has Dune: Part Three sixth in Best Picture.
About Wild Horse Nine
YES 8¢Martin McDonagh writes and directs Wild Horse Nine, a darkly comic political drama set shortly before Chile's 1973 coup. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell play CIA agents dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, played by Steve Buscemi. Their mission becomes increasingly complicated by the agents' pasts, the political situation around them, and a relationship that develops between Malkovich's character and two rebellious students. The cast also includes Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, Tom Waits, and Parker Posey. McDonagh has already taken Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin deep into previous Oscar seasons, and AwardsWatch currently ranks Wild Horse Nine third for Best Picture ahead of its November 6 theatrical release.
About Digger
YES 4¢Digger brings Tom Cruise back to a very different type of starring role under director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Warner Bros. describes Cruise's Digger Rockwell as the most powerful man in the world, racing to convince everyone that he can save humanity before a disaster of his own making destroys everything. The supporting cast includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Iñárritu shot the movie entirely in VistaVision, and the film reaches theaters and IMAX on October 2. Beyond the technical pedigree, the major awards question is Cruise himself. Entertainment Weekly points to the combination of a dramatically different role, Cruise's long Oscar history, and Iñárritu's record of directing actors into Academy contention.
About The Debut
YES 5¢Jesse Eisenberg wrote and directed The Debut, an A24 comedy centered on Mona Friedman, a quiet housewife played by Julianne Moore who lands a tiny role in a local community-theater production and becomes consumed by method acting. Her determination to defend the artistic integrity of her minor part eventually puts her at war with the show's domineering director. Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey, and Eisenberg also star. The movie arrives December 11, but much of the early Oscar discussion is already focused on Moore. Entertainment Weekly views the performance as a possible route to a second Academy Award, while AwardsWatch currently keeps The Debut just outside its August Best Picture top 10.
About Fjord
YES 3¢Cristian Mungiu's Fjord enters awards season with something most contenders will never have: the 2026 Palme d'Or from Cannes. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve play Mihai and Lisbet, a Romanian-Norwegian couple who move with their five children to a remote Norwegian community. Their conservative religious beliefs increasingly conflict with the people around them, and the situation escalates after bruises discovered on one of their children trigger scrutiny from local authorities. The resulting drama examines parenting, faith, cultural assimilation, social institutions, and the limits of judgment without reducing the conflict to an easy answer. AwardsWatch currently ranks Fjord fourth for Best Picture, while Entertainment Weekly also identifies it as an important international contender.
About Project Hail Mary
YES 2¢Project Hail Mary is already one of the year's biggest commercial success stories. Ryan Gosling stars as science teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes alone on a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there and gradually discovers that he has been sent on a mission to prevent a mysterious cosmic phenomenon from killing the Sun. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed the adaptation of Andy Weir's novel, with Sandra Hüller also in the cast. The movie opened March 20 and has remained part of the Oscar conversation despite arriving much earlier in the calendar than most traditional awards-season releases. Entertainment Weekly notes its nearly $700 million worldwide box office and Gosling's widely praised performance as reasons it could remain relevant through nomination season.

An order for 1,000 Odyssey shares showed an average contract price of 52.03¢, an estimated total cost of $537.79, a maximum payout of $1,000, and displayed potential profit of $462.22 if The Odyssey ultimately wins Best Picture.
How the Kalshi Best Picture Market Resolves
Kalshi resolves the market using the award winner published by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Each movie is its own binary contract. A YES position wins if that movie is officially named the Best Picture winner at the 99th Academy Awards.
Winning contracts settle at $1. The contract's expiration is tied to the first 10:00 a.m. ET following the release of the Academy Awards results or the specified expiration date, whichever occurs first. The market rules also state that revisions made after expiration are not used to change the settlement value.

My Best Picture Pick Is The Odyssey
I'm not a huge fan of the Oscars anymore, especially because I think the ceremony and the surrounding conversation have become too political. Because of that, I probably won't be putting any money into this particular market.
That doesn't mean I've stopped following movies. Cinema is still one of my personal interests, and I watch a lot of new releases throughout the year.
I haven't seen every serious 2027 Best Picture contender yet, especially with several of them still months away from release, but I have seen The Odyssey. I thought it was awesome.
Based on what I've seen so far, The Odyssey is my pick to win Best Picture at the 99th Academy Awards. It has the scale, directing, performances, technical work, audience attention, and overall cinematic presence that I would expect from a Best Picture winner. I'm clearly not alone in thinking that either. It's leading Kalshi by a wide margin, and AwardsWatch currently has it first in its Best Picture forecast.
There is still plenty of time for that to change. Dune: Part Three hasn't even opened yet, The Black Ball is moving into its fall release, and movies such as Wild Horse Nine, Digger, and The Debut still have their biggest awards-season tests ahead of them.
For now, though, I'm going with The Odyssey. What do you think wins Best Picture in March?
The Best Picture Race Could Look Very Different by January
One of the biggest mistakes this early would be treating the September market as a finished nomination list. Some films have already been released and reviewed, while others are still being priced primarily on their directors, casts, trailers, festival reactions, and previous awards records.
Dune: Part Three does not arrive until December 18. The Debut opens December 11. Wild Horse Nine reaches theaters November 6. Digger arrives October 2. La Bola Negra begins its U.S. theatrical run October 16. Those releases can create large changes in both industry forecasts and prediction-market prices.
The January 21 nomination announcement will then remove another major layer of uncertainty. Movies that fail to make the final Best Picture field effectively lose their path to winning the award, while nominees that outperform expectations could attract significantly more attention.
