The race to become the 2028 Democratic presidential nominee is already attracting substantial attention more than two years before the presidential election. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez currently leads the Kalshi nomination market at 18%, with Gavin Newsom at 16% and Jon Ossoff at 14% based on the market prices captured on August 15, 2026.

Kamala Harris follows at 9.3%, while Mark Kelly, Pete Buttigieg, Josh Shapiro, Rahm Emanuel, Andy Beshear, J.B. Pritzker, Wes Moore, Ro Khanna, James Talarico, Michelle Obama, and other possible candidates trade at lower prices.

Those figures are prediction-market prices, not polling results. Traders are buying and selling contracts based on who they believe will ultimately secure the Democratic nomination. A candidate can therefore lead the market without leading every public poll, and the prices can change quickly as new political developments occur.

Who Leads the 2028 Democratic Nomination Market?

Kalshi currently places three candidates above the rest of the field. Ocasio-Cortez trades at 18%, Newsom at 16%, and Ossoff at 14%. Harris remains within the next tier at 9.3%.

The gaps remain small enough that the order could change considerably before candidates formally enter the race. An 18% market price for Ocasio-Cortez means traders currently assign substantially more probability to all other possible outcomes combined than to an Ocasio-Cortez nomination.

No Major Candidate Has Officially Declared Yet

The Washington Post described the Democratic presidential field as wide open and unsettled in its August 13 analysis. Its list includes former presidential candidates, governors, senators, House members, and other possible entrants, but none of the contenders discussed had officially declared a presidential campaign at the time of publication.

That distinction matters. Prediction markets are currently pricing what candidates might do, how they could perform if they run, and whether other contenders could enter or withdraw before primary voting begins.

Who Are the Main Democratic Contenders for 2028?

The market currently concentrates most of its attention on several recognizable Democratic figures, but the political routes available to them differ considerably.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Kalshi: 18%

Ocasio-Cortez currently holds the highest Kalshi price. The Washington Post identifies her as an obvious possible standard-bearer for the party's progressive movement if she chooses to run. She has not ruled out a presidential campaign, although a future Senate campaign also remains possible.

Gavin Newsom

Kalshi: 16%

Newsom remains one of the most nationally visible Democratic governors. The California governor has repeatedly positioned himself in direct opposition to President Donald Trump and has publicly acknowledged that he is considering a presidential campaign.

Jon Ossoff

Kalshi: 14%

Ossoff has moved into the top group of the prediction market. The Washington Post reports that the Georgia senator has attracted substantial attention through speeches and social media while campaigning for reelection in one of the country's most competitive Senate races.

Kamala Harris

Kalshi: 9.3%

Harris enters any 2028 discussion with national campaign experience as the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024. The Washington Post reports that the proposed placement of South Carolina at the beginning of the Democratic primary calendar could be relevant to her support among Black Democratic voters.

Mark Kelly

Kalshi: 5.4%

Kelly represents Arizona, a closely contested state, and has positioned himself against some of the Democratic Party's movement toward the left. His background as an astronaut and his fundraising ability give him a different political profile from several other possible contenders.

Pete Buttigieg

Kalshi: 5.1%

Buttigieg already has presidential-primary experience and served as transportation secretary under President Joe Biden. The Washington Post notes that Democrats frequently identify him as one of the party's effective communicators and that he remains near the top of several early primary polls.

Josh Shapiro

Kalshi: 4.6%

Shapiro governs Pennsylvania, one of the country's most important presidential battleground states. His immediate political focus is his 2026 reelection campaign and helping Democratic congressional candidates compete in Pennsylvania.

Wes Moore

Kalshi: 2.4%

Moore is another younger Democratic governor receiving national attention. The Washington Post reports that some Democrats view the Maryland governor as a possible new-generation contender who could become more significant as the field develops.

What Do Early Democratic Primary Polls Show?

Early national polling should be read differently from a prediction market. The New York Times maintains a tracker compiling polling for the 2028 Democratic presidential primary, giving readers a way to compare surveys as more polling becomes available.

Poll results can differ because pollsters survey different groups of voters, use different candidate lists, collect responses at different times, and ask questions in different ways. That matters considerably this far from the election because the final list of presidential candidates does not yet exist.

A poll measures the preferences expressed by the people surveyed. A prediction market measures the price traders are willing to pay for contracts tied to the eventual outcome. The two can therefore show different leaders without either measurement being contradictory.

Why Prediction Markets Can Differ From Presidential Polls

Markets Price the Final Outcome

A Kalshi trader is trying to predict who eventually wins the nomination, not simply who a voter prefers today. Traders can account for the chance that a candidate never runs or leaves the race early.

Polls Measure Current Preferences

Primary polling asks voters about their preferences at the time of the survey. Those preferences can change after campaign launches, debates, endorsements, primaries, and major political events.

The Candidate List Is Not Final

Several people receiving meaningful market prices may decide against running, while another candidate who receives little attention today could enter the race and gain support.

Market Prices Move Continuously

Prediction-market prices can react quickly to campaign announcements, election results, polling releases, fundraising reports, political controversies, and changes to the primary calendar.

How Much Could a 2028 Democratic Nominee Prediction Pay?

Nomination contracts can produce substantially different payouts depending on the candidate's current price. Lower-priced contracts cost less because the market currently assigns the outcome a lower probability.

Each winning Yes contract pays $1 if the candidate satisfies the contract's resolution rules. The examples below use the displayed Kalshi prices from August 15, 2026, whole contracts, and assume the full order fills at the stated price.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Payout Examples at 18¢

Budget Contracts Approx. Cost Payout if Correct Approx. Profit Before Fees
$25 138 $24.84 $138.00 $113.16
$50 277 $49.86 $277.00 $227.14
$100 555 $99.90 $555.00 $455.10

Example assumes AOC Yes contracts are available at 18¢. Actual execution prices, available quantities, and fees can change the final cost and return.

Kamala Harris Payout Examples at 9.3¢

Budget Contracts Approx. Cost Payout if Correct Approx. Profit Before Fees
$25 268 $24.92 $268.00 $243.08
$50 537 $49.94 $537.00 $487.06
$100 1,075 $99.98 $1,075.00 $975.03

Example assumes Harris Yes contracts are available at 9.3¢. Prices can move before an order fills, and transaction fees can reduce profit.

Why the Harris Payout Is Much Larger

The difference is caused by the contract price. A Harris Yes contract at 9.3¢ costs almost half as much as an Ocasio-Cortez Yes contract at 18¢. The same $100 can therefore purchase substantially more Harris contracts.

The larger possible payout also reflects the market assigning Harris a lower current probability. If the selected candidate does not win the Democratic nomination under the contract rules, Yes contracts settle at $0.

What Would $100 on Newsom or Ossoff Pay?

Candidate Yes Price Contracts Approx. Cost Payout if Correct Approx. Profit Before Fees
Gavin Newsom 16¢ 625 $100.00 $625.00 $525.00
Jon Ossoff 14¢ 714 $99.96 $714.00 $614.04
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 18¢ 555 $99.90 $555.00 $455.10
Kamala Harris 9.3¢ 1,075 $99.98 $1,075.00 $975.03

These examples are mathematical illustrations based on the displayed market prices and whole contracts. They do not guarantee that an order of this size can be filled at one price.

What Could Change the 2028 Democratic Nomination Market?

The current prices represent a race that has barely begun. Several events between now and the first presidential primaries could substantially change how traders value each candidate.

The 2026 Midterm Elections

Ossoff, Shapiro, and other potential presidential contenders are involved in important 2026 races. Their results, campaign performances, and national visibility could influence how traders evaluate them afterward.

Official Campaign Announcements

A candidate formally entering the race removes one major source of uncertainty. A prominent Democrat declining to run can redistribute probability across several other contracts.

Early-State Polling

National recognition matters early, but Democratic delegates are ultimately awarded through state primary and caucus contests. Competitive polling in early states can quickly alter expectations.

The Democratic Primary Calendar

The order of early contests can benefit candidates with different demographic, geographic, and organizational advantages. The Washington Post reports that Democrats have recommended South Carolina as the first 2028 nominating contest.

Fundraising and Campaign Organization

A presidential campaign requires national fundraising, staff, ballot access, advertising, and state organizations. Candidates who demonstrate those capabilities can become more credible to voters and traders.

Debates and Major Political Events

Presidential races can change rapidly after debates, endorsements, policy disputes, investigations, controversies, or unexpected national and international events.

Does AOC's 18% Price Make Her the Favorite?

Ocasio-Cortez has the highest individual price in the current Kalshi market, so she is the market leader at this moment. That does not mean traders consider her more likely than not to win the nomination.

An 18% price still leaves roughly 82% of the implied probability outside her contract. Newsom, Ossoff, Harris, Kelly, Buttigieg, Shapiro, and numerous lower-priced possibilities collectively account for most of the market.

The distinction is important in a crowded presidential primary. A candidate can rank first in a market while still having a relatively low absolute probability because traders expect several plausible paths to the nomination.

Could Kamala Harris Run Again in 2028?

Harris remains part of the potential 2028 field after serving as vice president and becoming the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024. Her national recognition and existing relationships within the Democratic coalition separate her from candidates who have never run a national campaign.

The Washington Post also identifies the proposed early role for South Carolina as potentially important to Harris because of her support among Black women, an influential group within Democratic primary politics.

Her 9.3% Kalshi price indicates that traders currently assign her a meaningful possibility of winning another Democratic nomination, but substantially less probability than the combined field.

Why Has Jon Ossoff Moved Into the Top Group?

Ossoff is one of the newer names receiving substantial attention in the 2028 discussion. The Washington Post reports that he has generated millions of views from political speeches and social media content while becoming an increasingly visible critic of the Trump administration.

His immediate test comes first in Georgia. Ossoff is running for Senate reelection in 2026, and the Washington Post describes that contest as one of the country's most competitive races.

His 14% Kalshi price places him close to Ocasio-Cortez and Newsom even though the presidential primary remains more than a year away from becoming a conventional active campaign.

Where Does Gavin Newsom Stand?

Newsom has remained near the center of Democratic presidential speculation because of his national profile as California governor and his repeated confrontations with the Trump administration.

The Washington Post reports that Newsom has openly connected current political scrutiny to the possibility that he could run for president. His current Kalshi price of 16% places him two percentage points behind Ocasio-Cortez and two points ahead of Ossoff in the captured market.

What the Current Market Lead Does and Does Not Mean

Kalshi currently has Ocasio-Cortez first, Newsom second, and Ossoff third. That ordering describes the market on August 15, 2026. It is not an election result, a Democratic Party endorsement, or a scientific poll.

The race remains early enough that the eventual nominee could be one of today's leaders, a lower-priced candidate, or someone who currently receives little attention. The Washington Post's assessment similarly describes the Democratic field as unsettled and leaves room for candidates who may not yet be central to the discussion.

Who Is Most Likely to Win the 2028 Democratic Nomination Right Now?

There is no dominant candidate in the current market. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has the highest Kalshi price at 18%, followed by Gavin Newsom at 16%, Jon Ossoff at 14%, and Kamala Harris at 9.3%.

The narrow percentages show how uncertain the race remains. No major contender discussed by the Washington Post has officially declared, the final candidate field is unknown, and the first Democratic primary contests remain well ahead.

For now, Ocasio-Cortez is the individual market leader, but the combined probability assigned to other candidates is far larger. Candidate announcements, the 2026 midterms, fundraising, early-state polling, the Democratic primary calendar, and future political developments could substantially reorder the market before voters begin selecting delegates.
