Kalshi traders currently predict there's about a one-in-three chance that 2026 will be the hottest year on record.. The live market fluctuates around 32.5% to 33.7%, with Yes contracts available near 35.4¢ and No contracts near 67.4¢ at publication.

The settlement standard is considerably narrower than the headline suggests. A regional heatwave, one record-setting month or an unusually hot summer doesn't decide the contract. Kalshi relies on NASA's completed annual Land-Ocean Temperature Index and compares the 2026 result with both the 2025 annual value and the 2024 record of 1.28°C above NASA's 1951–1980 baseline.

Our analysis places the probability between 25% and 35%, with 30% as the most reasonable midpoint. A record year remains plausible, but the available data continues to favor No because 2026 enters the second half behind 2024 and requires an exceptionally warm July through December period.

What Must Happen for the Contract to Resolve Yes

The market resolves Yes only when NASA GISS reports an unsmoothed 2026 Land-Ocean Temperature Index value above the published 2025 result and above 1.28°C. Since NASA places 2025 below 1.28°C, the decisive requirement is a 2026 annual anomaly that exceeds the 2024 record.

The contract opened on November 9, 2025, and remains available through the end of 2026. Settlement depends on NASA's publication of the completed annual temperature data, so the winning side isn't necessarily paid immediately after December 31.

2024 Remains the Global Temperature Record to Beat

NASA confirms that 2024 is the warmest year in its temperature record, which begins in 1880. The annual global surface temperature reached 1.28°C above NASA's 1951–1980 baseline and exceeded the previous record set in 2023.

NASA's GISTEMP data places 2025 at 1.19°C, below 2024. NOAA's separate global dataset ranks 2024 first, 2023 second and 2025 third. The agencies use different methodologies and baseline periods, so their anomaly values aren't directly interchangeable. Both datasets nevertheless identify 2024 as the current record holder.

NASA Determines the Kalshi Outcome

NOAA and Copernicus provide important context, but neither source settles this contract. NASA GISS supplies the controlling annual value, so the NASA monthly and annual series is the primary dataset for evaluating the market.

2026 Ranks Third Through the First Six Months

NOAA's January through June comparison places 2026 behind 2024 and 2025, but ahead of 2023 at the same point in the year. NOAA measures these anomalies against the 20th-century global average.

Through June, 2026 trails 2024 by 0.15°C and 2025 by 0.07°C. It runs 0.13°C warmer than 2023 at the same stage. NOAA currently considers a top-five finish very likely, but it doesn't identify a new annual record as the most probable result.

NASA's January through June anomalies total 7.13°C, producing a first-half average of approximately 1.188°C. To finish above 1.28°C for all 12 months, July through December must average slightly more than 1.371°C.

The required second-half average is approximately 0.10°C warmer than the second half of 2024, around 0.05°C warmer than the exceptionally hot second half of 2023 and roughly 0.22°C warmer than the second half of 2025. That threshold is achievable, but it demands a substantial acceleration from the current pace.

Why the Yes Side Still Has a Credible Path

The Yes position remains viable because June materially improves the outlook. NOAA ranks June 2026 as the second-warmest June in its global record, behind only June 2024, while global ocean temperatures reach their highest recorded level for the month.

Record June Ocean Heat

Copernicus places the extra-polar ocean at its highest June sea-surface temperature in the ERA5 record. Persistent ocean warmth can support elevated global air temperatures over the remaining months.

Developing El Niño

Copernicus identifies developing El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific and expects the event to intensify during the coming months.

2026 Is Ahead of 2023's Pace

NOAA's first-half comparison places 2026 above 2023 at the same point, and 2023 later produced an exceptionally warm second half.

Half the Annual Data Is Still Outstanding

July through December can materially change the annual result. The contract depends on global monthly anomalies, not the severity of summer conditions in one country or region.

El Niño can increase global temperatures, but its largest annual influence often appears after the ocean and atmosphere interact for several months. A strengthening event can support late-2026 warmth while potentially exerting an even larger effect during 2027.

How Much the Yes and No Predictions Can Pay

With $125 entered on either side of the live market, Kalshi currently lists a maximum payout of $336.93 for Yes and $180.87 for No at the prices in the order panels.

Yes offers the larger potential return because the market considers a new record less likely. No costs more per contract because traders currently assign it the higher probability of settling at $1.

What Happens When the Prediction Is Wrong

A Yes position settles at $0 when NASA's annual result fails to exceed the contract threshold. A No position settles at $0 when 2026 does exceed it. The trader can lose the full amount committed to the incorrect side, plus applicable transaction fees.

A trader can sell before settlement to secure a gain or limit a loss, but the result depends on the available market price. Price movement before expiration doesn't change the final NASA-based settlement standard.

Our Prediction for the Hottest Year Market

Weather and climate contracts are among our favorite prediction-market categories because they combine public data, forecasting and clearly defined settlement rules. Some short-term temperature markets become easier when recent conditions and current forecasts point in the same direction. Narrow temperature ranges remain much more difficult because a small forecasting error can determine the outcome.

This annual contract is fundamentally different from predicting whether Phoenix reaches 100°F tomorrow. Six global monthly readings remain, and NASA calculates the result from worldwide land and ocean temperatures. An extreme summer in one location doesn't automatically produce the annual global anomaly required for settlement.

We aren't convinced that 2026 will overtake 2024. NOAA currently ranks the first half third among the four recent years compared above, and NASA's monthly data indicates that July through December must average approximately 1.37°C above the GISS baseline. That is a demanding threshold.

The Yes outcome still has a credible path. The market enters the second half with record June ocean temperatures, a developing El Niño and roughly two months remaining in Northern Hemisphere summer. Based on the available evidence, we assign the record outcome approximately a 30% chance.
